Denji is the main protagonist of Chainsaw Man. As a young boy, he inherits his father's debts from the Yakuza. After meeting Pochita, a dog demon with a chainsaw head, he becomes a Devil Hunter for the Yakuza in an attempt to clear his debt. Once the Yakuza, under the control of a Devil, betray him, he dies and Pochita becomes his heart. Now he turns into the Chainsaw Devil by pulling a cord on his chest. After meeting Makima, the director of Japan's devil hunting bureau, he became a Public Safety Devil Hunter. As a result of living in poverty most his life, in addition to never attending school, Denji is unaccustomed to regular social norms and his maturity is stunted for a person his age. His basic desires are also incredibly simple, such as hot food, clean water, and proper shelter, because he grew up having to fend for himself. Beyond these things, he craves love and affection wherever he may find it. He believes strongly in protecting those who are weaker than him and returning kindness to those who are good to him, even if they may not deserve it.
